RECYCLING FOR PROFIT
Recycling for profit has these elements:
  • Recycling service which picks up materials at curb side in residential areas and in bulk from commercial and industrial plants.
  • Compacts common metals and plastic into pallet cubes and resells the metal and plastic.
  • Any copper or other valuable metals are crushed and cubed and stored in a secure warehouse.
  • Payment will be made to the customer or firm for the aluminum cans and other valuable metals. The payments will be made in local currency, yet to be named.
  • Kitchen and garden waste and yard waste will be used for compost.
  • Paper and cardboard waste will be used for making biochar and syngas.
  • Glass will be ground for use in casting Collectors for the Solar Furnace CHP System. Some of the plastic will also be ground and used for casting the Collectors.
  • The net profit will be used to fund the Credit Union and the local currency foundation.
  • Some of the plastic will be melted an spun into biofilters.
  • The stored copper and other valuable metals will be used as if “gold” to back the value of the local currency issued by the foundation (at par with the national currency (e.g. SA Rand).

RECYCLING SERVICE
A recycling service will operate in cities and major towns and provide waste collection as follows:
Plastic, wheeled bins with lids:
  • Green Bin: Kitchen and garden fruit/vegetable waste; food scraps including bones, fat, oil, and meat.
  • Grey Bin: crushed aluminum cans
  • Red Bin: crushed tin cans with lids inserted
  • Yellow Bin: recyclable plastic
  • Brown Bin: paper and cardboard
  • Small quantities: bagged and tied using plastic film grocery bags or clear trash bags.

The bins are loaned to the customer but a fully refundable deposit is required to cover the cost of the bin. Customer places bin at curbside when full. With the City's permission, we will paint a green zone next to the driveway entrance so that the bins can be located there on collection day and so that the waste collection crew has easy access to the bins. The contents of the waste bins are collected using a truck tractor and trailer or beverage delivery van. See examples below.
In each compartment, there is a free standing unit “Waste Cage” which is removable. It just fits the compartment. The waste cage has a sheet metal front “door” which is sealed when in use, and is about eighteen inches short of the top of the unit. This gap allow the bin to empty into the unit. The front “door” is hinged at its top and is locked at the bottom with a cam closing device to compress the seals around the edges to the core of the unit. The Waste Cage has, at the upper back, a large cylinder around which a cable is wound. This cylinder is powered by an air motor which through a series of sprockets and chains, provides the power to raise the filled bins. At the bottom of the door, a hook engages a bail which is part of the bin. The bin is raised as the compressed air is fed to the air motor. The operator simply moves the air valve to “open” to activate the air motor. The farther the valve is opened, the more air pressure and volume is added to the air motor. When the bin is empty, the operator simply backs-off the air pressure which allows the bin to return to the ground as fast or as slow as needed.

There is a gap of about eighteen inches between the top of the “front door” and the top of the trailer roof. As the airmotor driven cable raises the bin, it is tipped to empty the contents into the Waste Cage compartment. The tipping occurs when an extended lip of the bin comes underneath a down curving set of hooks on the upper edge of the “front” door. This rotates the bin and dumps the contents into the waste cage. This approach meets the OSHA objections noted in the article at: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/beverage/delivery_trucks.html
When the trailer is full, it comes to the storage and processing area. The trailer is position over the dump area. The bin door is raised. The waste cage is freestanding and is hinged on the front bottom. The receptical compartment is tipped out and the contents fall into a hopper designated for the particular product.
The waste cages are made as free-standing units so they can be slipped into the standard compartment of a beverage delivery trailer or van (lowboy). The existing light weight, sheet metal door on each compartment remains so as to provide visual appeal and to provide for rain and wind protection. The Waste Cages are so designed as will allow us to easily remove the waste cage for power washing of the unit and the compartment.
Payment System. As each bin raised, a digital meter measures the weight of the contents and records it digitally. A paper printout is provided and left in a ziplock plastic bag attached to the bin. The customer thus has a receipt for the contents, cast in terms of the local currency. At the storage and processing area, the information on all pickups is downloaded via wireless to the Company computers which then issues to that customer, the credits in local currency. The customer is a member of the credit union (we will have formed) and has an account in the CU to which the credit is made. The next day, the member can electronically check the balance either via the Internet or by phone. See: ELECTRONIC FUND TRANSFER: http://masallp.wetpaint.com/page/ELECTRONIC+FUND+TRANSFER

JEM NOTE: Please note the air conditioning unit on the front. This unit can be a cooler or adapted to keep the contents of the trailer below freezing. Our truck tractors can be used to haul trailers full of fresh and frozen fish to market, thus giving the truck cabs more work to do and thus reduce our operating costs. The trailer would be loaded in the front part of the trailer with frozen fish and with fresh fish in the rear part of the trailer.

The big American is looking at a record year DaimlerChrysler's Freightliner brand of American trucks has always been one of the automotive giantess's big performers and now the South African operation is building on that winning heritage. Freightliner trucks have been one of the biggest local winners in the heavy commercial vehicle stakes this year and its share of this market segment over 16 tonnes is already up by 3 percent compared to the same period last year. Its present 9,6 % September performance sets it up for a record breaking year.

Johan Cloete, divisional manager for Freightliner at DaimlerChrysler South Africa, is happy with the state of affairs and sums up: ''Customers in South Africa want the latest technology and Freightliner can offer the best in customised technology. With the sophisticated new Argosy in the line-up, I believe we can become the No 1 seller of American trucks in South Africa.''When looking at the so-called American truck segment that account for about a third of the heavy market, Freightliner's share currently stands at 33 %. It is also steadily gaining share in the over 400 hp sector - a sector that has shown the most growth for truck tractors with a gross vehicle mass of more than 16 tonnes.
The Freightliner stand naturally showcases its brand new Argosy but also represents a good cross section of the Freightliner's products in South Africa. Three 6x4 Argosy truck tractors - one fitted with the popular Cummins 600 hp and one with the 600 hp Caterpillar engine and 110'' raised roof - are on show with a Century Class C120 58'' raised roof with a Cummins ISX 475 hp engine and the FL80 4x4, an exciting new freight carrier. ''We have a responsibility to provide a full range of products and we believe this product will find great market acceptance,'' says Johan Cloete about the 4x4 unit. The Argosy 90 truck tractor with its 354 kW demonstrates the company's latest 18-speed 'Autoshift' transmission for the first time in South Africa.

A first of its kind in Africa, the Eaton-Fuller fully automated mechanical transmission allows a gearbox electronic control unit to talk to the engine module via a data link at the rate of 56 000 bytes per second, resulting in perfect seamless shift of every gear - without the use of the clutch!A mechanical clutch is still part of the drive train but is used only to engage engine power for starting the truck from a standstill and when stopping. Once the Freightliner has moved off, the driver can rely on the engine and automated shift to select precisely the right gear for every grade and engine torque situation. Johan Cloete feels that 'Autoshift' will eliminate the technical strain on drivers in the future. Training of drivers in future will become more complex with on the one hand intensive driver training to meet technical driving requirements and on the other hand general road sense. ''Autoshift will bring advancement of the latest technology and will actually eliminate the high road technical straining that the driver needs to drive the very latest trucks,'' he says.

Argosy - Low cost of ownership

Continuing its low cost of ownership philosophy and offering a prolonged life expectancy, the Argosy was designed on the principle that the only thing better than making components easy to access is making them easy to ignore for longer periods of time. There are components all over the truck that set new standards for reduced maintenance requirements. Some components - such as the steering shaft, leaf spring bushings, drive shaft and clutch bearing - need no maintenance at all. The Century Class Argosy has the best standard warranty of its kind, covering the basic vehicle for 2 years or 400 000 kilometres.
Freightliner Business Class - new release for rough terrain The Freightliner Business Class rigid freight carrier is on show in a 4x4 configuration. Its full electronic Caterpillar engine delivers 186 kW at 2 200 r/min and torque at 895 N.m at 1 440 r/min. Freightliner's medium duty line of trucks is the fastest growing full product line for the marquee and is regarded as the American industry's technological benchmark. Greater versatility of chassis and wheel-base, combined with optimal payload area, make the Business Class Series 80 a sound proposition for beverage companies, distributors of food and goods and municipalities.

At the show the vehicle has been fitted with a HIAB 125-2 fully hydraulic mounted crane with a vertical reach of 11,5 metres. Its applications are endless and its folded configuration allows the 4x4 truck to operate over the most demanding terrain.

Century ClassA showcase of advanced safety and technology, the Century Class defines a new era in trucking. It achieves breakthrough in fuel efficiency, integrated electronics and driver safety and comfort, while enhancing standard Class 8 features. Innovative noise reduction and anti-vibration technology give it a smooth and quiet ride. Highly refined aerodynamics and lightweight components save weight and fuel without sacrificing strength. Unprecedented onboard computing power connects the data delivery systems of the 21st Century to provide drivers with information, communications and entertainment - all in one unit. With more than forty new internal and external safety features, including a standard driver-side air bag, the Century Class is a world leader.
