The richest 1 percent of Americans possesses more wealth than the combined wealth of the bottom 90 percent. Appalachia is testimony that unless the uninhibited pursuit of self-interest is tempered by recognition of a common interest, our democracy may well collapse under the weight of intolerable inequities.
A society should not be judged by the number of millionaires, but how well it takes care of the least of us.

When the writer Arthur C. Clarke died in late March, a passage appeared in his obituary: "His notions of the future remained unswervingly radical. Sir Arthur knew that outlandish ideas often became reality. But they provoked, he wrote, three stages of reaction. First, “It's completely impossible.” Second, “It's possible but not worth doing.” Third, “I said it was a good idea all along.”
"One is not born a cooperator, because to be a cooperator requires social maturity, a training in social coexistence", he wrote.
